Shelly Rahme is an emerging artist who lives and works in
Toronto and Northern Ontario. In 2005, she returned to Canada from the United States where she
had been studying and working. She received her Masters of Fine Art from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. It was in Southern Illinois
where she began to create large scale indoor and outdoor sculptural
installations. She continues this practice along with recent experiments in
making small sculptural landscapes. She uses industrial
material to create landforms and natural phenomena. Her work
appears as hybrids of manufactured material and nature. |
|
|
The central focus of Shelly Rahme
work is reflected in her use of materials. She uses the industrial materials that shape our
built environment: the asphalt of roads, the glass and drywall of
buildings, to list a few. Rahme uses these materials because of their
manufactured flatness and striking contrast with the natural environment.
She creates landforms and landscapes ranging from hand-held sculptures to
grandiose installations. In doing so, Selly Rahme reverts the industrial material to
a quasi natural state.
