MARGARET NIERADKA

Margaret Nieradka currently is majoring in painting and drawing at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto working towards her BFA degree. An artist also  works for an art charity called Discoverability where she teaches art workshops in elementary schools.
Her education began in Vancouver, in other fields of study such as environmental- biology and world religions with a focus on non-Western world art. Nieradka's interest in non-Western art lead her to take further classes in the area, such as Asian and Latin American art history.  She decided to return to Art and therefore completed a two-year Visual Arts Program at Langara College in Vancouver. Nieradka's non-art areas of study occasionally come out in her works as well as love for childish imaginary narratives based on environmentalism or abstract stories (world religion). Here is what is in her artist statement:
"I go to great lengths to truly create originality. I also believes that art must have “brains and beauty”, so I focus both on the concept and the visual, whether it be installation, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking or painting. I also go about my work with a recipe of sorts. I research and then let ideas “simmer.” This helps me to make work with a more organic vigour. I then add music which helps me travel into the unknown and finally I try and let the whole process make some sense on canvas for the rest of the world to see".

Margaret Nieradka's art influences are Inuit Art, Russian Constructivism, Art Brut and the art with the insulting names: Primitive and Naïve.

"Her works are highly original, slyly whimsical, and profound. I'm delighted to
have acquired my first Nieradka!"

Associate Professor, York University
