MARGARET NIERADKA

Artist statement

After some time making art I have come to realize that I am much like satellite dish and that the canvas is a TV screen; reception is not always clear or understandable but this is normal for the pictures must come from a thousand miles away, missing some parts and arriving in a coat of absurdity and rarely clear on the screen.

When they do arrive I greet them like guests and play music that I suspect they will like... so they stay. I save my best music for the pictures. This is how I paint on a good day.
On a bad day with no "reception" the blank canvas looks at me as if it is saying, "guess?" So, ok I guess. I paint a dog, the canvas says "no." So I paint over the dog and paint a camel, the canvas says "no." This battle continues until I have painted a history with layers as deep as Thames River mud. Yet, eventually I guess right and the battle is won.

In addition to these experiences I also take inspiration from Inuit art, Russian Constructivism, Art Brut, Primitive and Naive art...real "Heavyweight champions"

Margaret Nieradka's education began in Vancouver with World histories, World religions and environmentalism, after exploring these areas she finally resided in a Visual Art's  program. Next she arrived in Toronto where she gained her BFA at the Ontario Collage of Art and Design: Along side this she teachers children art with the Organization: Discoverability

"Her works are highly original, slyly whimsical, and profound. I'm delighted to
have acquired my first Nieradka!"
Katherine Bischoping,
Associate Professor, York University
