Encaustic is a versatile medium. Photographic images can be transferred
onto the colored wax. Organic materials including leaves, wood, stone,
bones, shells, etc. can be imbedded into the wax. Wire, pieces of rusted
metal, pieces of glass, fabric, etc. can also be worked into the wax.
Paper images, photographs, drawings can be collaged onto the wax surface
and protected infinitely with a coating of wax medium. Stencils (not
plastic) can be used. One can, of course, paint an image,
representational or abstract, onto the prepared wax surface, as well.
However, no artistic ability is required to produce uniquely beautiful
encaustic artwork.
Therefore, for maximum enjoyment in your first encaustic class, I
suggest you bring any of the above mentioned items. If you choose to
bring a photograph to transfer onto the wax, please make sure it is a
photocopied Xeroxed image,
not an ink jet printed image. This is necessary to ensure the
image transfers, since a compatible ink is used in the photocopying
process. Also, I suggest you bring more than one copy of the image you
wish to transfer. A suggestion would be to bring a photo of a favorite
person, place or pet. I will have a variety of materials to try, if you
choose not to bring anything.
Please wear an old shirt or an apron to protect your clothing.
I
look forward to meeting you all!
